Rafik Al-Hariri was still a student when he first had the idea of establishing a foundation for education and higher learning.
As a university student he was aware of the importance of such a foundation in helping the new generation explore the future.
After graduation, he worked as a teacher, but the dream remained alive.
When circumstances were right and the resources available, he was able
to realize his dream.
The Islamic Foundation for Culture and Higher Education in Sidon marked the beginning of what later flourished as the Hariri Foundation in Sidon, Beirut, Tripoli and Bar-Elias. There were also offices abroad in Paris, London and Washington D.C.
The Foundation, which was established in 1979, has the following objectives:
- Develop education and facilitate the spread of learning, knowledge and culture throughout Lebanon.
- Improve the standard of living of the society as a whole.
- Assist various sectors of the population to implement projects of general utilitarian value.
During 1979 ? 1980 the Foundation granted loans to 64 students. The number increased to 112 on 1980 ? 1981.
Work at the Islamic Foundation for Culture and Higher Education was supervised by Mrs. Bahiya Al-Hariri, sister of the founder. The Foundation was active as a non-profit academic institution established to spread learning and knowledge in Lebanese society in general and in Sidon and the South in particular. The work was carried out regardless of political or sectarian affiliation.
The Foundation?s projects were deeply appreciated by the citizens of Sidon because they met essential needs in the South. The educational activities carried out in Sidon were of great importance especially to families concerned about the education of their children. As a result, Rafik Al-Hariri foresaw the need to expand these activities to include all of Lebanon. The Hariri Foundation was later established in Beirut to undertake the comprehensive cultural and educational role that Lebanon has needed since its independence.
